چکیده

The objectives of this study were firstly to validate the standard MERIS data products for coastal waters (Case 2) after the improvements done in the 2 processing, and secondly to test the performance of the FUB and Case2R processors. Validation was performed for data between 2002 and 2007. The in situ data were mainly collected by a Ferrybox system onboard MS Color Festival between Norway and Denmark. Water samples were analyzed for concentrations of chlorophyll-a and total suspended matter. The validation is based on the MERIS Level 2 Reduced Resolution data available after the 2 reprocessing of MERIS. In this reprocessing data from Skagerrak was used in the training of the neural network. Based on the data available the MERIS standard Case 2 chlorophyll-a product (algal_2) shows some overestimation compared to the in situ data. Retrieved concentrations of total suspended material (TSM) are close to the in situ values. The FUB (v1.3) and Case2R (v1.4 beta) processors show promising results for the algal_2 and TSM products. The comparison performed here are from open sea areas in the Skagerrak. We see that close to the coast and in the Oslofjord the problems of atmospheric correction and/or adjacency effects are significant. This needs to be addressed and solved before the MERIS data can be used quantitatively in the Norwegian Fjords. The study also demonstrates that Ferrybox turbidity data and water sampled by a Ferrybox system and analysed for Chl-a HPLC or TSM can be used in validation in coastal and Case2 waters. The use of data along a whole transect (as opposed to single sampling positions only) improves the interpretation and understanding of the variation that we observe between satellite and in situ data and is therefore valuable for improving the validation in coastal waters.

Meris Imagery of Belgian Coastal Waters: Mapping of Suspended Particulate Matter and Chlorophyll-a

This paper describes a first application-oriented analysis of MERIS products for Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) and Chlorophyll-a (CHL) concentration in Belgian coastal waters. Regional algorithms designed for Belgian waters have been implemented and compared with the standard MERIS products, termed Total Suspended Matter and Algal2 respectively. The standard and regional SPM products seem ...

Preliminary MERIS-Validation Results for the Baltic Sea

Validation of MERIS data was performed for Case-2 waters of the Baltic Sea. The area of investigation was focussed on the western part including open sea and discharge areas of the Oder river in the Pomeranian Bight. These activities included an overview about the variation ranges of the different MERIS products, methodical investigations, as well as qualitative and quantitative validations. Pr...

Validation of the Operational Meris Fapar Products

This paper discusses the validation of the operational Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) land product which corresponds to the biophysical variable of the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR). The FAPAR value acts as an indicator of the presence and state of the vegetation and it is currently estimated from MERIS data at both reduced and full resolution ...

Performance of Fapar Operational Products Derived from Meris at the Full and Reduced Resolutions

This paper discusses the validation of the operational Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) land product which corresponds to the biophysical variable of the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR). The FAPAR value is currently and automatically estimated from MERIS data at reduced resolution and it can be computed using the full resolution using the same phys...

Validation of Meris Water Products in the Southern North Sea: 2002-2008

This paper describes the validation of MERIS water products for the Southern North Sea for the period July 2002 to September 2008. During this period, 39 matchups were obtained for the parameters water-leaving reflectance spectra, chlorophyll a concentration and total suspended matter concentration, of which 12 are in optimal conditions. Previous validation results reported for 2002-5 are updat...
